On January 26, 1950, the British constitution was abolished and India became a sovereign democracy, and a written constitution was enacted.

The foundation of a sovereign nation is its own constitution. In 1935, the British government enacted the Government of India Act-1935, a constitutional framework for India. The Constituent Assembly of India was convened for the first time on 9 December 1946.

A seven-member committee chaired by Dr. Ambedkar drafted a draft constitution on 1947 November 4 and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly. The Constituent Assembly has met 166 times and 308 members have discussed the issue.

The draft constitution was adopted on 1949 November 26.Two years, 11 months and 18 days of various sessions were held to draft the Constitution of India, and finally 308 members of the Constituent Assembly signed it in its Hindi and English versions on January 24, 1950.

Two days after the signing, the Constitution of India came into force on January 26. January 26 was chosen because India’s Declaration of Independence was adopted on this day in the 1930s.

Since January 26, 1930, the National Congress of India has observed this day as Full Swaraj Day or Independence Day, which has been designated as the Constitution Day or Democracy Day.
